Former Barcelona forward Rivaldo is convinced that Lionel Messi will join Paris Saint-Germain after the French side’s comfortable victory over the Catalans on Tuesday night.
PSG came to the Camp Nou and beat Barcelona 4-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, which could prove to be Messi’s final European night in a Barcelona shirt at the Camp Nou.
“This heavy defeat against PSG will almost certainly be Messi’s last Champions League game with Barcelona at the Camp Nou,” Rivaldo told Betfair.
“[Barcelona cannot give Messi] the real possibility of fighting for big trophies.
“His future will be PSG, even more so given his display at the Camp Nou. They are a team that can give him the option of continuing to win trophies.”
The Brazilian made clear that as great a player as Messi is he cannot rescue Barcelona all by himself.
“Messi is well into his 30s, [and he] is still taking responsibility for the team,” Rivaldo explained.
“And to make matters worse, this season he has seen his best teammate, Luis Suarez, leave in an incomprehensible sale that has served to make Atletico Madrid stronger than ever. Suarez is now the current Pichichi…”
Rivaldo is clear that Barcelona have no chance of coming back against PSG in the second leg in Paris.
“There is not a single player in the squad who believes in the comeback. It’s impossible to turn it around,” he stated.
The 48-year-old, who played for Barcelona between 1997 and 2002, has thrown his name behind Joan Laporta in the race for the presidency at the Camp Nou.
“Yes, I publicly declare that I support him because I believe that the club needs a strong president who is able to bring the club back to where it belongs, to fight and reclaim the space they have always had to occupy,” Rivaldo said.
