She stood before the door, wearing a pair of dirty old trousers and tattered brown shirt. She had stolen the dress from a palace worker. It was perfect for the mission, it enabled her to blend in the darkness and pass by people unnoticed. It was the only way she could have done it, anyone would have noticed the princes running around in her gown and when the theft report comes out, it would have been easy to know who to point the accusing finger to.
Carefully and quietly as she could, she turned the lock of the large old brown oak door and it opened at once with a slight creak. She paused to let the echo of the sound die down and listened to hear if there were any movements or noise and when she was satisfied that there was none, she opened the door and stepped in.
It was night, but the room was brightly illuminated by the light from the tree. Everywhere in the room seemed to effuse magic, and she could almost feel it.
Though the large white tree standing in the middle of the room was the only magical thing present, the room still felt as though everything in it contained magic. That was the work of the witch. It was a little trick to scarce off any intruder from the room; but Freya knew better.
She walked towards the magic tree and stared at the two red apples hanging form it. She was there for them, for the apples. Not to eat them of course, but to steal them. She didn’t know what they did, but she knew they were precious to the witch who pretended to be her grandmother, and she was going to steal them.
She reached for the apples and when her hands touched them, she felt a slight tingling sensation wash over all of her body. It was magic, she knew. She clutched the fruits in her hands and pulled. The apples broke off the branch and at the same time, a bright light surrounded the apples, but soon it was gone. And when she looked in her hands, there were no apples there anymore.
In place of the apples, there were two red shoes. “Perfect!” She chuckled. She didn’t know why they had turned to shoes, but that was the least of her concerns. She put the shoes on and a blinding white light engulfed her. She felt magic flow through her.
She didn’t have the time to process that when the door flung open and the witch stormed in.
