She felt her heart skip a beat as she opened her eyes and saw the gateman bent over her. She did not know what to do because she was afraid that struggling with him would put me in danger and her mouth was clasped shut with his left hand. She looked into his eyes and what she saw there terrified her more than anything in the whole world. He had a look of sheer lust mixed with something else she could not pin point. She knew even I was in danger. In a twinkle of an eye, he brought out a glistening knife- he seemed to have changed his mind about raping her anyway since he seemed to be in a mad rush. He dashed for a boobs, and because he needed the use of his two hands, he removed his hand from her mouth warning her not to make a sound with his eyes. Before he could get an inch closer to her boob, she shrieked so loud he jerked back and started looking frantically around especially at the door to be sure he wasn’t coming out any sooner but she did not relent, she kept screaming. When he heard the doorknob turning, he took off.
Olamide yanked the door open just on time to see the fleeing man with the glistening knife in hand. He sprinted after him but before he could reach him, he had already jumped over the fence not minding the barbed wire. He quickly went back to her, she sat hurdled on a corner, quivering out of fright. He bent over, cover her up with the wrapper, scooped her into his arms and carried her in. the lady woke up when they stepped into the bedroom.
Lady: “What is going on here? I think I heard someone scream in my dream. Why are you bringing her in here?” she sat up.
Olamide: “Can you go to the sitting room please?” his voice sounded hoarse and serious.
Lady: “Why? Because of your maid? Isn’t she supposed to be sleeping outside?”
Olamide: “I swear I will throw you outside the gate if you ask me even one more question right now. Go and wait for me in the sitting room now!” he bellowed, casting a glance at my mum who was still in shock. The lady scrambled to her feet and strutted off hissing like an angry python.
He placed her gently on the bed…
Olamide: “I am sorry” I am sure he could not recognise the sound of his own voice. Saying sorry was not something he did often.
Ahunli: “I will pack out of your house in the morning”
Olamide: “You don’t have to do that. Our two years contract is not over yet and don’t try to use this against me. It is part of our agreement that I could still do whatever I wanted. I could still have my space so why are you acting like a real wife being cheated on? That is not even the issue right now, who was the man? I will kill him when I get hold of him I swear”
Ahunli: “The gateman” she said and turned her face to the other side when she felt the tears threatening to come rushing down all of a sudden.
Olamide: “The gateman? You mean Audu?”
Ahunli: “Yes! and he seemed to have been trying to cut off my boobs and probably cut out some other things from my body”
Olamide: “Jeeesus! Fuck! Damn it! I shouldn’t have let him escape just like that. I pray he meets his nemesis someday by crossing my path. If I don’t kill him with my bare hands, God!” he thundered, pacing around furiously.
Ahunli: “Stop acting that way. One might actually start thinking you care about me when you obviously don’t. Your lady friend is waiting for you in the sitting room. Go and meet her” she said and turned her back to him. She started weeping when she heard his shuffling feet on the tiles indicating he was actually leaving. She was still scared out of her wits and all she wanted was for him to get on the bed with her and hold her in his arms. She felt so vulnerable and helpless that she started cursing the day she actually decided to trick him into getting her pregnant. What pained her the most was the fact that there was nowhere she could run to at that moment? She had no friend anymore. Alexis had stopped talking to her the way she used to no matter how much she tried to make her see reasons or get their relationship back on the right track again.
She heard them talking in the sitting room…
Lady: “So how can you ask me to vacate the room for her like that? I know she is not your maid. You are just a fucking lying prick” she heard her say.
Olamide: “Whatever you say. Just mind your own business okay? Besides what is your name again?”
Lady: “What has my name got to do with you? Just pay me for my services tomorrow and i’d fuck out of your miserable life. the funniest part is you don’t even know how to pleasure a woman. You are just so zero”
Olamide: “Is that so?” he asked sarcastically. “You see that lady in there? can you go tell her that so you can experience the worst day of your life? how do you think she got that big belly? I scored a goal in the most erotic way any lady can ever
experience. You can never know how that feels since you have tasted so many men and your life is damn ruined. Pathetic slut. Now that we’ve exhausted all we have to say, can we sleep now? just sleep on the long chair over there, I will go back to the bedroom”
She started to forgive him just at the thought of him getting back to the bedroom with her.
Lady: “So you mean you threw a woman carrying your baby out in the middle of the night? you are the meanest man I have ever seen in my entire life. if I were she, I’d walk out of your life at daybreak without leaving even a single reminder of me behind. I will make sure you never get a whiff of your baby after then”
Well doing that did cross her mind but she knew that once he starts acting sweet towards her, her resolve will melt off like a tiny piece of ice under a scorching sokoto son.
Olamide: “Oh really? Well thank God she is not you. If she were, she wouldn’t even be living in my house to begin with. She would have probably being a prostitute though and I don’t sow my seed in an unwatered ground. I first nurture it, clear it, water it then sow my seed in. you are a very infertile land dear lovely. Now get out!” he ordered.
She knew their little argument was going to get out of hand and turned restlessly on the bed making me turn with her.
Lady: “You insult me not knowing you are exactly like me. You call me a slut or prostitute not knowing you are a prostitute or even worse yourself. What good man will have a woman waiting for him at home but will still patronize a prostitute in the same home? you are worse than the devil and believe me, I am not leaving this house until you have paid me every dime for my time”
Olamide: “You think I am daft? I did not touch you last night. so just get out”
She heard them struggling and realised he was trying to push her out while she resisted him. she got out of the bed. As soon as she stepped into his home office, she saw her dsh for the kitchen and returned swinging a knife furiously at him while he dodged it.
Ahunli: “Stop it now!” she yelled and the lady stopped for a while.
Lady: “You just get back inside while I deal with this scum who feels ladies are his to be rubbished. I will cut off that manhood you use in terrorizing innocent ladies like her” she threatened and flung the knife at him again and the knife caught him on right thigh. My mum quickly went and stood in between the two of them when the lady swung the knife in a blind fury the second time and…
*This part reminds me of another stanza of Samson’s poem I recited from the beginning of this story:
Who shall save him
That holds a lighted lamp
In his hands
And yet lose himself
In the open roads?
You probably weren’t expecting me to say she slide the knife through my mum’s stomach then ask you if she or I will survive, were you? Well that wasn’t it. Well she dropped the knife as hurriedly as she could when she saw who was in front of her at the last minute. My mum collapsed on the floor when she saw the knife fall
off her hands. The happenings of that morning was too much for her to take; first of all it was an assailant who almost cut off her boobs and now a furious prostitute threatening the life of the man she loved.
Olamide: “Hey Ahunli! Are you okay?” he bent over her and shook her vigorously trying to rouse her up. He ran to the kitchen, got a clean cold water and splashed it on her face while the lady looked on with concerns written all over her face.
Lady: “Is she okay?”
Olamide: “Wake up dear. Are you okay?” he looked at her intently as she stirred wearily on the floor.
Ahunli: “Yes I am okay. How about you? Hope you are okay? And your leg?” She reached out with one hand to touch his cheek looking directly into his eyes.
Olamide: “I am fine, it was just a graze. Can you get up? Maybe I should get you to a hospital?”
Ahunli: “No I am fine” she said and made to stand on her own but he reached for her, helped her up and led her to the bedroom. He laid her gently on the bed.
Olamide: “Next time, don’t do what you did. What if she hadn’t stopped? What if she had plunged the knife into your stomach? Do you know how scared I was?”
Ahunli: “I smell love in your tone my heart’s terrorist” she giggled and slept off immediately. Her body and soul were worn out to the core.
He stood towering over her for some time, shook his head and left the bedroom. By the time he got to the sitting room, the lady had already left. He looked around to
be sure nothing was missing and yeah nothing was. He went out to check but she was nowhere around. Whether she jumped over the fence or disappeared into thin air, he didn’t bother to find out.
Four months after that incidence, I was given birth to. An innocent, bouncing and beautiful baby girl. I instantly became the apple of their eyes. My dad gave me more attention than he gave anyone in the world. But just so you know, their relationship did not change before or even after my birth infact it became worst. Shortly before my birth, my dad became even more distant to the extent that my mum stopped worrying about his whereabouts knowing he must be at the same drinking den with his friends. What they did there, only God knew.
So a week before I arrived, she decided to drag him along on her daily walk. she did not relent even when he refused so many times and asked her to go alone, he had to give in when he saw me kick with vigour from inside. He was enthralled with that he didn’t know when he wore his shirt and followed her out.
As they walked wordlessly on the marbled estate road, the stars did not change the way they shorn, the atmosphere emitted cool gentle breeze that blew her long dark hair about. They passed houses upon houses until she decided to break the silence…
Ahunli: “Uhmmm!” she cleared her throat.
Olamide: “I know you have something you need to say. Just say it already, isn’t that the reason I am here?”
Ahunli: “Okay! I want to talk to you about your lifestyle” she paused
Olamide: “What about my lifestyle?”
Ahunli: “Isn’t it high time you stopped living such frivolous lifestyle now that the baby is on the way?”
Olamide: “I don’t understand English so break it down. What is frivolous?”
Ahunli: “I am not joking here. You wouldn’t want to have your baby see the way you are sometimes would you? The way you drink, womanize, you even deal with prostitutes. Please I beg of you to retrace your steps or i will be forced to take my daughter far away from you and file a restraining order against you. The way you are right now, I doubt you can be a father in the real sense of it”
Olamide: “You wouldn’t dare do something like that to me. How is drinking alcohol a bad influence on a child who wouldn’t even be wary of it till she is 20years? And don’t you ever threaten me again with something like this or I’d be forced to create my own threats too. Don’t forget how you dramatically bullied me into accepting this baby and the marriage. We should start talking of how to separate already”
Those words of his stung her in the heart than the venom of a cobra would have.
Ahunli: “So you really feel there is nothing wrong with your lifestyle? That our baby will be safe? You really think so?”
Olamide: “Stop asking me stupid questions. This sure is the reason I never really wanted to get married. Every lady wants to change something in a guy’s life. Can’t you live and leave me to live too? Can’t you leave me the way I am? Isn’t it God who created us all?”
Ahunli: “I cannot allow you to keep threading on the path of destruction when I am having a baby for you” she said stubbornly.
Olamide: “I guess we are done with the walk right? I will be heading back home now” he said, turned back and started walking towards the direction they came from.
She watched him walk away with her heart in her mouth. Her sadness affected me in such a way that could not be described. I turned and kicked but she did not even notice, she was numb to every other form of feeling except the one in her heart.
Baby in the womb see and hear alot……
