Seyi interrupted her in the middle of her thought. “Isn’t it true that that just happened? I’m talking about this morning in Hendersonville, and it happened totally by chance. We didn’t make any arrangements; it was just a lucky happenstance.”
Lola shouted, “You don’t have sex with someone by accident!”
Lola understood that running her workplace was going to be a huge struggle. Seyi and Miles have been road warriors for the corporation for years, even longer than Lola. They didn’t often cross paths in the field because they each had their individual tasks. The Hendersonville unit’s most recent “all-hands-on-deck” emergency situation, however, necessitated their presence at the scene.
Lola saw nothing wrong with the assignment, and even if she had, it was an emergency circumstance, so any business policy prohibiting employees from traveling together would have been ignored.
“It just occurred, after all. It’s not like we had anything planned. You have no idea how insane it was! I picked Miles up from his apartment at 5:00 a.m. yesterday. We arrived around 7:30 p.m. and didn’t leave until around 10 p.m. last night. I honestly didn’t see him for the entire day. I was in production and he was in IT. When I ran across him, he had finished ahead of me and was checking things out. We both smiled and joked about how we work in the same office but never see one other. We were probably giddy from exhaustion.”
Mera inquired, “So, y’all simply agreed to spend the night together or what?”
“No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. We were starving and had no idea what would still be open. Nothing was available, so we went to a shop to at least buy something to eat before returning to the motel. Then we discovered we hadn’t made a hotel reservation at all! We didn’t get Collins to make reservations because everything happened so quickly. We began phoning hotels until we discovered a vacancy at a Holiday Inn Express. Except when we arrived, there was only one room. Everything was sold out at some kind of fabric convention in Carriere.”
Lola exhaled deeply, “Oh yeah.” “That was something I had forgotten about. It’s enormous.”
“Yeah, well, there was only one room, and well, we took it. He said he would sleep in the car, but I told him that was stupid. I said there would be two beds in the room, but the clerk shook her head and said ‘king.’ So I said I would sleep on the sofa, but the clerk shook her head again. No sofa. Just a dresser and tv and some chairs.
“Well, I took the key and we both talked as we walked back to the car for our bags. I told him that we were both grownup and could act like adults. Anyway, we were so tired and hungry that messing around was the very last thing on our minds. I mean seriously, I know Crystal and I like her a lot. And you know how much respect I have for Miles, I mean, for our whole team. I would never plan to do something to mess anything up.”
