The fact that I was the intern assigned to Mitch’s case doesn’t mean no other intern could attend to Mitch. Remember, the boss of bosses is the attending and the attending had the power to do and undo.
I was attending to another patient that afternoon atthe command of Dr Neil so, I wasn’t with Mitch. Someone else was, and that someone else was Parker.
He was supposed to be prepping Mitch for a surgery he had that afternoon and I thought he was, till I walked in just in time to hear Parker call Mitch a corpse that was hitting on a girl who would never have him.
I froze by the doorway, not knowing what to say. And as if that wasn’t enough, he went ahead and asked Mitch to ask me if we weren’t having the best sex of our lives till he came interrupting.
My jaw dropped and Mitch looked at me with scared eyes that were begging me to prove Parker wrong. But when he saw the look on my face, he knew there was no proving wrong and suddenly, the meterspiked and started to blare. Mitch fell back to his bed and his eyes shut.
He was having a heart attack.
I yelled and ran to him.
And I kept yelling till nurses finally rushed and did what I should have done in the first place, page the attending in charge.
Mitch was rushed into surgery half prepped and when he returned, he was alive but his condition had certainly worsened due to the heart attack.
I cried and cried and begged him to ignore what Parker had said and like the understanding lover that he was, he let it go.
It was a great relief for me and I was plenty mad at Parker. I threatened to break his nose if he ever came between Mitch and I again and he backed off.
Mitch‘s heart had worsened so badly that it could no longer pump blood on it’s own and he had to use a battery powered pump.
And you know what else was heartbreaking, his days were now definitely numbered.
All because of the heart attack.
I cried alone at nights and prayed that he found a heart before it was too late, and wether it was God that answered my prayers or God just took pity on him, Mitch found a heart.
And now, the plot thickens!
