She had dialed Shola’s number before she went to see her. Matthew had had go drop off earlier because he was already late for his lectures. Thankfully, Shola was around.
When she knocked on the door, it didn’t take Shola long to open the door for her.
“What is wrong D?” Shola asked after looking at her friend.
“I…” and her voice broke.
Shola held her and pulled her into the room, locking the door behind her. Diane’s sobs filled the room as she held onto Shola’s shoulders for dear life with her tears pouring out onto her shoulders
“It’s okay,” Shola comforted her friend as she rubbed her back.
When Diane felt like she could finally talk, she pulled back from the hug and sat on the bed. Shola sat on the chair, waiting for her to talk but not asking her to.
“I saw Uche and Zia.”
“They were, they were having sex, Shola. They were fucking. He was cheating on me and he hit me and forced himself on me because I cheated on him!”
“He raped you, that bastard. See, babes, I don’t know what you want to do but you’re not going back to uche.”
“You’ll be fine.” Shola went to hold her again.
Later that evening, she made up her mind. Dressing up, she went to see Uche. Shola wanted to come with her but she denied her, telling her that she would be perfectly fine.
“I want a break up,” she told Uche when she walked into the room. “No, I’m breaking up with you.”
Uche laughed in a mocking manner. “You are nothing without me, let’s just forget this and move on. I forgive you, you forgive me,” he said and rushed to her side, trying to grab her hands.
She pulled her hands away from his hold. “Don’t touch me, don’t you dare. I was fine before you and I’ll be fine after you, even better. I want you to get the fuck out of my place before this night.”
“I paid for the rent.”
“And it’s in my name. I don’t owe you shit, I’ve never owed you anything. You gave money in this relationship and I gave my peace of mind, mental health and happiness so I don’t owe you any fucking thing.”
Uche laughed and she walked out, not giving him a chance to say another word to her. Everything about his being disgusted her. She hadn’t set her eyes on Zia since the incident happened.
She expected to see her when she would return to the house but she still wasn’t there.
“Now that that is settled, what will you do about Matthew?” Shola asked her when she came back that afternoon.
“I don’t know.”
“Too bad, you have to think of something right now because he’s here.”
She turned in time to see Matthew walking into their room. “Hey,” he said softly.
“I will leave you guys,” Shola said, excusing herself. She patted Diane’s hand on her way out.
“How are you?” Matthew asked.
She opened her mouth to reply him but there were no words forthcoming so instead, she just walked up to him and hugged him. He hugged her back, kissing the nape of her neck.
“Matthew, I feel like I need time,” she pulled back and looked at him. “I don’t want to make any decisions right now, please.”
“It is fine, I just need you to be okay.” He cupped her face in his hands. “Promise me you’ll be fine D? And you’ll call me if you need help, if Uche does anything stupid, you’ll call me.”
And she nodded before he hugged her again.
She knew that her life was far from being okay, if anything, she had a long way to go but she was positive. She had him, she had Shola, she knew that all will be fine. It was only a matter of time and patience.
