When she reached Matt’s place, the first thing she did was to enter the bathroom. She dropped the toilet lid down and sat on it.
“If you need anything, I’m outside here.” Matt called out to her from the room, after he knocked on the door. She loved the fact that he understood how much she needed her space.
Her phone vibrated and she saw that it was a message from her beloved Uche. ‘Tell them you fell down, if the ask’ was what the message said. It made her laugh, a dry sad laughter.
She got up and walked to the sink to wash her face. Looking into the mirror, she saw that the bruise wasn’t that visible. It was a dark spot beside her right eye, towards her ear. It was only someone who looked at her long and hard that would notice it and she knew Matthew was surely going to see it. When he would ask, she didn’t know if she would just tell him the truth or cover it up with a lie.
She walked out of the bathroom and he rushed to her side.
“Are you hungry, should I make something for you.”
She nodded. “Anything rice, please.”
He smiled and dropped a kiss on her cheek. “I will be right back,” he said before disappearing into the kitchen.
She walked over to the bed, laid on it and covered her self with his blanket. When she felt comfortable, she dialed Shola’s number.
“Hey girl, I’ve bee trying to reach you since this morning. Wassup?” Shola said in a rush.
“What did he do?”
“He…” She stopped and peered towards the kitchen to be Matt was not listening in on her conversation. She could hear the distant sound of pots and plates indicating that he was busy. “He hit me again, he did it again and seized my phone but that’s not even the worst one.”
“He forced himself on me. I’m so bruised down there, I don’t…I don’t know what to do babe.”
“Eh?” She asked for affirmation. She couldn’t believe Shola would suggest that sort of thing. Sure, it was the logical thing to do but she wasn’t innocent too. She had cheated on him, right? And leaving him just like that, she couldn’t survive how it would be if she left Uche.
“Leave the guy alone, break up with him.”
“Shola, it’s not that easy.”
“See, don’t tell me that nonsense. I like stating the facts. You cheating on him with his brother was completely evil, I would not sugar coat that but the same way you have no excuse for doing that is the same way he has no excuse for hitting you what more forcing himself on you. I’m sure he’s not sorry, he doesn’t look like he’s ever going to change.”
“I feel like I owe him so much, Shola.”
“He is not your God, you do not owe him shit. Get the fuck out of that relationship before you’re ruined.”
“He forced himself on you, Jesus! Isn’t that registering in your head?”
“Calm down before Remi hears you, please.”
“What don’t you want Remi to hear?” Matthew’s voice came up behind her.
Diane turned to see him, looking at her with her brows rose as he waited for an answer.
“Just tell him, I don’t know why you would be covering up for a rapist.” Shola said over the phone, reminding her that she was still on a call with her.
“I’ll call you back,” Diane said and dropped the call. She braced her self for whatever would come before she said. “Uche hit me and forced himself on me.”
